The Homestar Runner Network is the newest online community for fans of the Homestar Runner cartoons created by The Brothers Chaps. There are already hundreds of vibrant Homestar Runner fan communities on the net, so why build a new one? We call this a meta-community because we're not so much concerned with making connections and relationships between individuals, but with making connections and relationships between communities themselves. This is a community of communities.
If you're already a member of a Homestar Runner fan community, this site will eventually help you learn what's going on outside your neighborhood. If you don't already belong to a community, this site will also help you discover new communities you might be comfortable joining.
The Network is built on the shiny new Drupal 5.0 platform, which has a number of great features out of the box and thousands of available modules to extend its capabilities. Decisions remain to be made about which modules to employ in making this site the most fun and useful it can be. For now, we know we'd like to include the following features:

new guy
Hey guys. Sorry I don't know much about computer stuff. I wish I could help get this site off the ground. But I like Homestarrunner. It's pretty cool that someone started this .net thing. Anyway, it's good to be here. Hi all.
What?
ok one thing we dont need are blogs... even though at times they can create interesting conversations on forms they'll most likely bring in some whinny kids... we dont need that... What we do need is a forum, or at least a better message board.
I've got one.
I've got a forum... but it has blogs, unlike what you want, but has a unique concept. I'll say more when I can.

Forum!
I think that this website should have a forum. 'Nuf said. Okay... I'll say more. If this is a site for communities to communicate, why not do it via a forum?

blogs
I think that blogs should not exist. They wast storage space. Instead the should be a news "wheel" that starts on H*R news but can be "rotated to retrieve data from the community sites own blogs, that way they wouldn't be restricted by Drupal 5.0.
The Directory would be good.
Groups would be teh best.
stuff
the cheat will destroy you all!!! :D

I Agree.
You couldn't be more right. On second thought, maybe you could. But hey, you're still right.

Organization
It would probably detract from the purpose of a "community of commuinities" to offer blogs to individuals. Given the ease of getting a free blog from any number of other sites, it would make more sense to use this site as a central clearing house for people to find blogs with Homestar Runner related content. Users could nominate various blogs (including their own) which would be catalouged for the community as a whole. The idea of groups sounds OK, just as long as it doesn't get too cliquish.
Who says engineers are dull?
Quick show of hands....
Who around here actually searches for and reads H*R-related blogs? I can tell you for sure that I don't; there's not really anything I'm missing by being a part of HRWiki. If there really is a solid group of people who enjoy that kind of thing, sure, fine. But honestly, if it's not professional, there's no way even people who do read H*R-related blogs woud want to read it. — Lapper (talk)

My name is Amy and I am 19 my father owns this website.
In with the new, as they say.
Unfortunately, whoever you are or claim to be, this site was given to JoeyDay about a year ago to do with it what he would. Whoever may have used to own this site no longer owns it. — Lapper (talk)
Um... kay.
I don't really think that's what he's looking for.... — Lapper (talk)

Wait a seccond.....
Hey Dacheatbot! Aren't you the guy who joined my homestar forum just to see what it was like, and then after me trying to make you a mod, you just didn't go there any more?

WaAaAaAaAa!!! - Homsar
Nope
I don't think so, Dacheatbot apparently isn't a registered username... I'll change that!
Odd...
Wait... What do you mean by that? I don't understand that well. I was saying that there was someone on my site with the Exact Same Screen Name as yours, Dacheatbot.

No, we're all dead.
No, that's not happening. You'll know when it's time to be discussing things like that. — Lapper (talk)
No, I won't.
And how will I know when?

So wait, this site isn't related at all to marc, the original .net administrator that we all know and love? Or matts? :(

Hooooomsar,
.net original.
Ah, nope.
No, homesarrunner.net was handed over to HRWiki some time ago, and is not affiliated with the original webmasters of hr.net in any way other than that. — Lapper (talk)
YEAH MATT AND MIKE CHAPMAN
Whooooooot I am new to THIS site but deffinitly not new to HOMESTAR RUNNER AND THE "GANG". I've been watching Strong Bad E-mails for a long time and I've seen every one. ALL the toons are AMAZING AND FUNNY. I LOVE IT. BEST SHOW (INTERNET OR TV) EVER. BETTER THAN GOODNESS ITSELF.

Nice!
JoeyDay: Nice! I love this blog! I'll be looking forward to it's future developments. ;)
On The Point Of Blogs
I think that although blogs would be a cool feature, I think that, essentially, they are pointless unless they are used as news updates for sites. Back on the Alpha network when blogs were still enabled, I prided myself on having the network's first regularly updated blog. I even kept an archive so that I would be able to repost when the new system was up. However, looking back now, none of the posts actually had anything to do with H*R (besides when I'd post a random quote). There's nothing that a blog on the network could provide the average user that would be more useful than a traditional blogging site in my opinion.
I tend to agree
If everybody! everybody! wants a blog they should go to WordPress.com.
WordPress
I've found WordPress.com to be limited at best. Features are locked off, there's a finite number of templates, and everything feels pretty confined. If possible, always go for the real thing at Wordpress.org. — Lapper (talk)
Well, sure...
...but you can't beat free.
Ten months later, and we're up!
I would question the integrity of the site should every user get a blog. I still like the original idea, where only administrators of the respective communities would be able to moderate their community blog. As for "all known Homestar Runner fan communities", surely we aren't opening the floor to every average The Joe who starts a mediocre site. I'm sure users would rather see an index of lots of active and interesting communities. — Lapper (talk)
Ah, but that's where the magic happens!
I'd like to see the directory moderated by the community in such a way that the cream rises to the top. I'm envisioning something like Digg (and I'm positive Drupal can do this) where users vote on sites and the good ones pop onto the front page and the bad stuff never gets noticed. The only real rule would be that the site has to be a Homestar fan community. We'd obviously like to wipe out spam and things of that nature, but if somebody sets up a Homestar-based forum with only 5 or 10 members, I'd still allow them submit their site to the directory.
A suggestion
In addition to the digg system, which I think would work great, I suggest tagging each submitted site with info such as number of registered members at time of submission, format of site (fan content, informational, etc.), and year of creation. Then, on an index, users would be able to choose options like "show only fan content sites with more than 100 members that has existed for more than a year". This could also be used on an advanced search form to refine searches.
I think this could compliment a Digg-style architecture pretty well if the rankings of various sites were used in an index or as search results. For example, if somebody searches for the above criterion (fan content site, 1oo+ members, over 1 year of existence), the page with the results displays the site that fits the criterion with the highest "Digg" rating, then the next highest, etc.
Ninja time
We would also like to note that since HRWiki is Joey's favorite, it may spontaneously gain 20,000,000 diggs and age 15 years overnight. — Lapper (talk)
Ah, no.
While that would be fun, I refuse to give the Wiki any special treatment here. The Network will remain as neutral as possible.
*click*
Actually Joey, that would have been a joke. I'm not that irrational. — Lapper (talk)
For sure
Sort and filter are necessary features in my opinion.
